Modeling with Various Materials

In the design development stage, I explore possible design solutions based on the concept. The defined problems are addressed from multiple aspects and design ideas are expanded. This process involves rough and detailed sketches and 3D sketch models with various materials.

Examples from Master's Degree Project

The main technical concern has been conversion from gurney to wheelchair. Sketches and 3D sketch models have been created to consider technical solutions.

Detailed Sketches
Sketches in Design Development

Detailed hand drawings are made for two main reasons; one is to clarify technical design concerns, and the other one is to present my design ideas to other people for further discussion. For this project, I explored joinery design, since it would be a very important part in terms of conversion and design for developing countries.

3D Sketch Models
3D Sketch Models in Design Development

Some 3D sketch models are made based on rough and detailed sketches. Design ideas are further clarified both for myself and for other people. 3D sketch models are also helpful to identify physical design concerns. For this project, I made some 1/10 scale models with cardboard and foam core. Making sketch models is a trial-and-error process. It clarifies geometrical problems that cannot be found in detailed sketches. Initial ideas are reconsidered, then new ideas are tested on the spot.

Idea Sketches
Rough sketches of mechanical component design

Many of my engineering classmates in the Engineering Design program wondered what I was doing on my sketchbook. They even assumed that I cannot use a CAD program. But making rough sketches is a necessary step in my design process in order to make detailed mechanical design. I make this sort of rough sketches to generate ideas and eventually refine them to detailed mechanical components as shown in Design Refinement.

Modeling with Various Materials: Altered States

This studio project is about "counter-ergonomics"; design a human arm to fit an uncomfortable tool. Many models are made in the design development stage. For those models, different materials are used for different purposes; Plasticine, rigid foam, and high-density foam.
